Travelling to Italy with kids? Make sure to include Legoland in your itinerary!
Perfect for toddlers and children, Legoland is a definite must-do when you’re in Northern Italy. The water park is nestled within Gardaland, a theme park great for kids and adults alike. It’s also easy to get to: you can choose a flight from Malta to Milan Linate, Milan Bergamo, Venice Treviso or Verona. All airports are within a two-hour drive of the park (Verona Airport is only 20 minutes away!) and the stunning Lake Garda area.

Who is it best for?
Legoland, Italy is great for toddlers and children up to 12 years old
We travelled there with a three and six year old and they both had a blast. There are also more challenging slides for older kids. There’s a good scattering of shaded areas for little breaks in between (for us adults mostly). Only families with kids can enter the park.
It’s SUPER clean
It’s not often you can say this where waterparks are concerned, but Legoland tops off the list for cleanliness. Legoland is also new, so everything is in tip top shape. Staff clean all pools regularly, with some being closed off for a few minutes at intervals just to get everything sparkly clean. The same goes for the toilets and changing rooms.
It’s not crowded
There is a limit on how many people can be in the park at any given time. We visited in July and, while Gardaland was packed with an average of a 30-minute wait time for most rides, the kids could go up and down the slides at Legoland to their heart’s content (and without any substantial waiting breaks).
When purchasing your tickets, you have the option of either a two-day Gardaland ticket with a one-day entrance to Legoland, or a reduced-price two-day ticket with an afternoon entrance to Legoland. We opted for the first and there was no wait-time to get into the park in the morning. It’s possible that there will be queues to enter Legoland if you go for the reduced price ticket.
It’s safe
When it comes to waterparks, we’re always very scared of slipping accidents, or little toes getting stuck in tiny places. Our three year old found an (until then) hidden vault of energy and did not stop running from one pool to the next and from one slide to another the entire time we were there. We’re happy to report that there were no slips, and no toes caught anywhere, either!
There are plenty of lifeguards around at all times too, with staff manning each slide to ensure there are no kid pile-ups.
The toddler area is the best
The toddler pool and slides are set to a Duplo theme, so the environment feels immediately familiar to little ones. There are plenty of things to explore. The lagoon area is dotted with large floating Legos to collect as you and your little one drift comfortably on inflated rings.
There’s plenty of adrenaline opportunities for older kids
My kids are thrill seekers – unlike me. Where slides are concerned, the faster the better and our 6 year old loved the longer ones. There were moments where my husband and I had to divide and conquer. I stayed with the little one in the main area of the park and my husband accompanied the six year old on the more challenging slides. They were both happy exploring their own areas though and had heaps of fun.
The Lego builds are amazing
Just before you enter the water area of the park, you’re greeted with a series of magnificent Lego builds of sites from all over Italy. There’s everything from a mini Venice to a stately Vatican and the grand Milan Cathedral, perfect for exploring with kids.
There’s a Lego shop, too
Can you call it a theme park if there isn’t a shop or two? You can only exit Legoland through the shop (of course), but at least it’s a beautiful one and we believe a Lego set is always a good investment.
Legoland Tips
Bring your own food
There is one food stand within Legoland with some decent food. Although you may be better off bringing your own food and snacks. There are loungers where you can take little breaks and eat snacks before the kids excitedly run off for the slides again. On a general note, we were not impressed with the food in the parks or at Gardaland Hotel.
Plan your day
We spent an entire morning and early afternoon at the water park and after a quick shower and a change of clothes in the Legoland changing room, we stayed in the main park (Gardaland) to check out the rides and attractions there.
Our three year old slept just as we left the water park and us adults were utterly exhausted. Looking back, we would have gone back to the hotel for some rest time at that point and returned to the park in the evening, when it would have been cooler, calmer, and queues to the rides hopefully shorter – something to consider as you plan your own day.
To recap – the kids loved Legoland and they’re already asking when we can go back again. It’s fun, safe, and a must-do for anyone in the Lake Garda area, definitely a 10/10!
