How to Get to Tirol with Kids

Whatever way you decide to travel to Tirol, this region in the west of Austria is easily accessible thanks to its modern transport network.

Guests planning to arrive by plane will find direct flights from many European cities to the Innsbruck-Kranebitten airport. Some airlines even operate at a daily service to Innsbruck.

You can also drive to Tirol in your own car. Motorway travel requires a toll sticker (“Vignette”), whilst other roads are free of charge.

Children facilities include: childcare and baby sitting services (upon request), children’s bikes, baby monitor (available upon request), children’s playroom, a baby changing, children’s play area, a crib/baby bed, and highchairs. Children can also enjoy the playground on site and pony riding too. The hotel offers a family suite on the garden side with a balcony. This accommodates 2-4 people. It includes a separate bedroom, a living room and a pull-out sofa. Some suites can also be booked with a separate children’s room – for an additional cost. The family suite includes a bathroom with a shower and a double sink, a separate toilet, hair dryer, telephone, 2 TVs, a fridge and a safe. The children’s room can be booked with some “Bergwelt” suites and with some “Brixental” double rooms. This room features a bunk bed, a dresser and a TV.

Tiring our babies and toddlers whilst they absorb all that is around them.

Indoor Play AreasMurmi’s Kinderwelt in Kirchdorf, Happyhopp in Vomp and Joy das Kinderparadies in Völs are 3 out of the many soft-play centres. All these have slides, climbing walls, mazes, softball shooters, giant trampolines and electric go-karts.

Ellmi’s World of Magic – A great amusement park to visit with the family.  Kids will  be transported to the magical world of Ellmi – The Frog that is filled with elves, fairies and gnomes between May and October on Hartkaiser Mountain in Ellmau. There will be different activities going on such as climbing structures, a maze, water features, a giant basket swing and a trampoline.

Endangered Species Zoo in Ebbs – You will find more than 500 endangered species at this animal sanctuary. There is also a beautiful parkland and gardens.

Innsbruck Alpine Zoo – This zoo is unique focusing on animals that inhabit the Alps. Kids usually love the working farm where they can mingle with smaller animals like sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, and cows. There are also outdoor picnic areas Picnic areas with outdoor seating can be found at various locations around the zoo. There is also a nature-themed playground, which features a bear den.

Nattererboden – Here you will find roaming sheep, goats, fallow deer, donkeys, ponies, cows, and pigs. Kids can mingle with geese, ducks, hens, peacock, cats, rabbits, ferrets and turtles. Kids can roam around the zoo and its playground, whilst parents can spend time on the sunlit patio.

WIDIs Kids Park in Oetz – A free adventure playground in Tirol full of different equipment, a wooden climbing structure with bridges and ropes.

Kugelwald Adventure World – Located on Glungezer Mountain – The “Ball Forest” offers a variety of fun activities to keep the family busy. Kids can create their own track with the Forest Construction Kit.

Marmot Adventure Playground – Located in Gries, this is a marmot themed adventure playground. You will find variuos swings, a trampoline and climbing structures. Older kids will love the beach volley court. In winter, there is ice skating and ice curling.

Muttereralm Mountain of Adventure – Offering an array of outdoor activities. In summer you can experience go-karting and in winter, snow biking and sledding.  Kids love the adventure playground and the Magic Water where they can splash around. The Barefoot Trail offers fun for all the family.

Serlespark Water World – Kids get to learn all about the power of water with the different interactive features. The park also offers a circular walking tail around the reservoir.

“Osttirodler” Alpine Coaster and Lienz Schlossberg – There is a lot that you can do. You will fins a nature-themed adventure playground,  a petting zoo and Tirol’s biggest climbing park. Hop on a sled and cruise down to Lienz on the Alpine Coaster.

Fichtenschloss Rosenalm – You will find water play facilities and you can also jump in the Fichtensee lake. There is also a walking trail suitable for buggies connecting the Spruce Castle to the lake and the top station of the Rosenalmbahn cable car.

Keeping the older kids happy, entertained, and reducing the amount of times they ask for a screen or complain about being bored.

Nordkette Innsbruck – A huge nature park. Thee Nordkette Mountain range offers skiing, hiking, and great views. Get the cable car to enjoy more breathtaking views.

Tirol’s Historic Town Centre – Visit Tirol’s town centre and dive deeply into its architectural history.

Landeck Castle  – An exciting treasure hunt awaits the children here! Children’s afternoons are hosted every summer. Children are introduced to interesting information, and games are also held here.

Ehrenberg Castle – Children are introduced to a lot of interesting information on the Middle Ages during a quiz rally with Sir Rüdiger, after which the kids are appointed as knights and damsels of the castle.

Museum of Tirolean Farms – 14 historic farms from all over Tirol. Children can play around, as they walk from farm to farm and solve various riddles at the adventure stations.

Golden Roof Museum – Kunz von der Rosen, the personal court jester of Emperor Maximilian I accompanies children of all ages through this museum. There is also a room with selected children’ books and creative games, which makes one more curious about the Middle Ages and the everyday lives of knights and princesses.

Zeiss Plantarium – Special children programmes are available such as: Planets at your Fingertips, The Little Moon Bear and Holidays under the Stars. These programmes are suitable for kids aged 4+ years.

Bell Foundry – The Grassmayr Bell Museum is both a museum and sound space. Children love the impressive bells and playing with the different tones. Bells are cast every Friday and visitors are invited to observe the whole process.

Lehenlahn Mine – An exhibition of numerous Tirolean (semi) precious stones and other treasures. Children will find the fairy-tale tunnel and the fairy-tale mountain delightful.

Indoor Swimming Pools – Let your kids splash in the water and have fun.

Finkenberg Adventure Pool – Children can have fun with their parents. In July and August pool parties are organised for children.

Swimming Lakes – All lakes in Tirol have great mountain views. You can always go for a family hike and then stop for a dip in the lake, when days are warmer.

Zoos & Animal Parks in Tirol

Assling Adventure World & Deer Park – Visit this park for some amazing wildlife including, roe deer, martens, wild boars, mouflons, ibexes, marmots, wild cats, and more. There is also an adventure world for kids with The Alpine Coaster. You can also stop for a meal at the Bärenwirt Inn.

Aurach Wildlife Park – Large Alpine habitats are home to many different native and exotic animals. Within the heart of the park, there is an animal themed playground. You will also find a petting zoo with donkeys, goats, llamas, sheep and many more animals.

Ebbs Stud Farm – An amazing place for horse lovers. The stud farm also provides horseback and carriage riding lessons with professional and qualified riding instructors. Visitors are told the history of the horse in Tirol through agricultural artefacts such as ploughs, harrows, and wooden carts and carriages in the museum there.

Gasthof Walzl – Situated above Innsbruck in the rural commune of Lans. This restaurant can be reached by public transport, such as by tram #6. Their menu usually changes within seasons. They have a kids menu but you can also choose an adult’s meal and ask to have it as a child portion instead. They have an indoor play area but also an outdoor area with a playground, where kids can run free.

Wirtshaus Natterer Boden, Natters – A 15 minute drive from Innsbruck.  This is an ideal place for children, who can also pet the animals at the petting zoo, and ride the ponies there. Their homemade Huettenstrudel pie is amazing and you can also request smaller portions for children.

Die Geisterburg – Just 10 minutes out of Innsbruck. This place is easily accessible by rail, bus, car and bicycle. Try their delicious homemade burgers and fries. They also prepare real wood-fired pizzas, pasta, salads and eat. There is both and indoor and outdoor play area for kids.

Der Engel in Tannheimer Tal Valley – The restaurant within this hotel, is always happy to welcome children. There is an outdoor area where children can also run free.

The Tirol Hotel – Located in Ischgl. The hotel garden has a splish-splash play area and rocks to climb on for kids. Try out their amazing food and their delicious wild-berry ice cream.

Sailer – Located in the heart of Innsbruck, this restaurant has a varied menu from pizza to meat dishes. The interior is very cosy.

Cafe im Erzspeicher – Enjoy a great breakfast or brunch here. This cafe has a very family-friendly atmosphere. Coffee, pancakes, toasties, and delicious ice-cream.

Café 3.440 – This is Austria’s highest coffee bar. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee whilst looking at the most amazing views. The cafe also serves delicious sweets and cakes.

TRANSPORTATION

How to Get Around Tirol with Kids

Getting around Tirol and its surrounding areas is not difficult.

Two of the most popular methods are using the town’s buses or using a car.

Tirol’s public transport is well-organised and also includes trains.

You can also use the lifts when hiking in the mountains.

By Bus

Postbus – The yellow Post buses will get you nearly around everywhere in Tirol.

Flixbus – This bus service travels between Innsbruck and Munich via Seefeld, Scharnitz and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Buses leave more or less at two-hour intervals daily.

Hellö – A long-distance Austrian bus service travelling to 25 destinations in 6 countries.

Many opt to use the bus system which takes them from their hotel to the ski area, outside the city. Using the bus is easier than a rental car, as you won’t need to look for parking. Some hotels also offer the Club Innsbruck Pass which can be used as a free pass on the local buses.

Renting a Car

Several big car rental agencies are available at the Innsbruck Airport. These are: Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Sixt and Megadrive.

Cable Cars

One of the famous ones is the the Glacier cable car which reaches the Pitztal Glacier.

Smyths Toys Superstores – This is the biggest store in Innsbruck. This toy shop sells games, toys for babies and kids and toys for outdoor play.

In the city centre, you can also find some great clothing stores for kids including:
