How to Get to Trondheim with Kids

By Plane: Trondheim Airport (TRD) is Norway’s third largest airport, which has direct flights to/from most airports in Norway and several international cities. The airport is the hub for Trøndelag, Namdalen, Helgeland and Sweden’s Jämtland region. The Airport is located just 30 minutes away from Trondheim downtown.

By Train: Trondheim central station is located downtown in the city center next to the harbour. From the station, you can find various hotels within a short distance.

By Boat: Hurtigruten is well known all over the world as one of the most scenic trips by boat. The boat travels for 5-6 days along the Norwegian coast all the way from Bergen on the west coast to Kirkenes in the north. They have departures from both cities every day, all year round. It stops in many of the most exciting places along the way and Trondheim is of course a natural stop.

Must Dos When in Trondheim with Kids

Visit Bakklandet neighbourhood and take a picture with the beautiful and colorful wharves from the Old Town Bridge.

Visit The Ila neighbourhood – A neighborhood where old meets new, where the city meets the fjord and the surrounding woodlands, where vibrant street-art decorates both traditional wooden houses and industrial buildings. A cheerful place lined with colourful wooden houses and lush park areas. You can visit all year round, and it’s a short walking distance from the city centre. 

Visit The Brattøra neighbourhood – This area houses the city’s most spectacular skybar-view, Norway’s largest indoor water park, restaurants and cafes, outdoor art, the national museum for popular music (Rockheim), several bathing-spots and much more. The nearest hotel is located at Brattøra. But the neighbourhood is located close to Trondheim city center, which means that you have a shortwalking distance to Brattøra from almost all the hotels in the city.

Visit The Nidaros Cathedral. They have a rich program for families all year round.

  • Go on hikes up the central tower of Nidaros Cathedral and enjoy the great view of the city.
  • Go for a walk in the basement and crypt under the Nidaros Cathedral. Here you will find Norway’s largest collection of medieval tombstones.

Visit Munkholmen – Munkholmen is a small, charming island in the Trondheim Fjord, approx. 2 kilometers distance out of Trondheim. Munkholmen is a popular swimming spot for the city’s population and visitors during summer. There is a large green area perfect for sunbathing and playing, as well as a beach perfect for swimming. Bring your own barbecue, picnic basket or try out the café there. Munkholmen was Trondheim’s trial in the Viking Age. Just after the year 1000, a Benedictine monastery was built on the islet, probably one of the first two in the Nordic countries. You can visit Munkolmen during the summer season. You can take the boat to Munkholmen which departs from Trondheim’s city centre.

Activities for children ages 0-5

Tiring our babies and toddlers whilst they absorb all that is around them.

Pirbadet – Pirbadet is a water park in Trondheim. It is situated between sea and shore and it is Norway’s largest water park. Pirbadet is placed on the waterfront with the city’s best view! Some refer to the facility as a “bathing cathedral”. At Pirbadet nearly all the attractions are found in one big room. They offer some bathing toys, but you can also bring your own. In the toddlers’ area there are water guns and various toys for the younger kids. The water holds about 31 degrees C. You will also find a jacuzzi here.

Ringve Botanical Garden – Ringve botanical garden is situated on the Lade peninsula, ca. 3 km east from Trondheim city centre. The garden is always open and has a free entrance. This is a place where you can enjoy the colourful biodiversity of plants, and get to know more about trees, plant evolution and popular ornamental plants, among other things. Kids can also run around to boil off some steam.

Ringve Music Museum – Ringve Music Museum is Norway’s national museum for music and musical instruments and it is golden for music lovers! At the museum you will find a large international collection of more than 2000 musical instruments. The museum is housed in four-century buildings, which are beautifully situated on a hill surrounded by the lush Ringve Botanical Gardens. Ringve offers a number of musical activities for people of all ages. Join a children’s tour at the museum or join a treasure hunt among the instruments! Head into the Music Garden and try and play for yourself on all the instruments!

Sverresborg Trøndelag Folkemuseum – Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum is an open-air museum. Located in picturesque surroundings around the ruins of King Sverre’s Castle, which is Norway’s oldest medieval castle. Live storytelling, theatrical performances, activities in the Birkebeiner camp and close-up contact with the animals makes Sverresborg a historic oasis for young and old alike. The open-air museum hosts a series of exciting events throughout the year, including the annual Christmas event on the first weekend of Advent and the museum’s large Mid Summer’s event. This museum is great to visit during all seasons and it is just 10-15 minutes by bus outside the city center.

Høyt & Lavt (High & Low) – Just outside the city center you can enjoy the outdoor climbing park. This climbing park offers a variety of climbing courses, from easier challenges not high above the ground, to long and exhilarating zip-lines and thrilling jumps. This climbing park is open during the summer season and it opens mid April.

Trondheim Kayak – Discover a completely new perspective of Trondheim on an urban kayak trip along the Nidelva river that winds its way through the historic city. This is a great activity all year round. 

Rockheim – This is Norway’s National Museum of Popular Music.

Trondheim Science Centre – This centre offers fun and informative exhibits for both young and old alike. Through hands-on experiences in the main exhibition, you’ll learn about themes like anatomy, electricity, physics and mechanics, hydro-power, geology and much more.
